It takes aligned action to earn media features! And what do we mean by "earned media"?

There are many companies out there who are flaunting "pay-to-play" media opportunities which instead of earning the press, you are basically purchasing advertising space.

If you have a product-based company—maybe selling organic skincare or beauty products, fragrance-free moisturizer, or the latest all-natural concealer, listen up.

Btw—we're Bridget and Lydia, co-founders of Visibility on Purpose. Our company helps train brands and teams on how to land top tier media features that generate new customers/interest and help their brand be known.

If you have a product based company that specializes in natural skincare or beauty products, there has never been a better time to shout your products from the rooftops as more consumers are waking up to the toxic products they've been using on their skin.

Here are our TOP tips to get your brand known through earned press features:

  1. In order to get your brand recognized, you need to let your favorite magazines, podcasts, and tv stations know that you exist. If you're not working with publicist or a PR agency already, you (or your team) can do this yourself. It's all about crafting a pitch that really highlights the brand's story, the biggest differentiators of your brand vs others and showcases interesting points that help that platform (ie magazine, TV station, podcast) see the value in an interview or a feature.
  2. You need to actually reach out to them, because the odds of them reaching out to you are slim to none. It's like finding a needle in a haystack. Identify what the best platforms would be for your company or brand. Around the holidays, magazines love to put together top "gift guides" that showcase their favorite products and link to your site. Podcasts love to really feature the founder or brand story—so find shows that would be great for your target customer base. TV stations love to feature timely, relevant and newsworthy content—say that a recent study came out about the problems with parabens in our skincare. This is a great opportunity for you to contact TV stations about how your product is quite the opposite but still leaves your skin dewy and beautiful.
  3. You need to claim your expertise and let them (aka the media contact who you are reaching out to) know why you, as the founder, or the products that you sell are worthy of their attention. Tell a story with your pitch that helps that contact see the VALUE you'd bring to their platform. Remember, they are always thinking from the perspective of THEIR audience.

Once you do these things, the opportunities, really start to flow in. After your have some interviews or features under your belt, share those wins all over your socials and your brand's website. Then keep pitching (but add those press features into your pitches).
