As a business owner who wants sales pouring in and people seeing your brand as the obvious choice, you’re probably already considering (or working on) getting media mentions across the web. But how does SEO come into play when it comes to compounding that authority with rankings, sales, and traffic? That’s why we’ve asked our online business friend, SEO Consultant & Educator, Mariah Magazine to dive into SEO, including how it works alongside PR to elevate your business’ success through organic marketing.

WTF is SEO?
Okay, let’s kick off from the beginning so we’re all on the same page.
SEO = Search Engine Optimization.
Which, in plain English, is just: making your website easy for search engines (like Google & AI) to understand, categorize, and actually show + recommend to people.
The internet is crowded. Like, millions and millions of websites crowded.
So when someone types something into Google or AI, these tools are NOT randomly pulling results. They’re actually trying to match that search to the pages that make the most sense based on what was typed (aka: keywords).
Your job with SEO is to make it painfully obvious:
What your business does
Who it’s for
And what each page is about
So that these search & AI bots aren’t guessing.
Guessing = confusion.
Confusion = not ranking.
Not ranking = no traffic.
Why PR Alone Isn’t Enough
Getting featured, mentioned, or linked from reputable sources across the internet? Incredible.
But if your site isn’t clear and optimized, all that attention hits your website and stops.
Good SEO makes sure that when visibility comes in (whether it’s from Google, media features, or someone casually name-dropping you) it actually sticks, and builds visibility momentum, LONG term.
Try to think of SEO LESS like a separate strategy, and MORE like the thing that helps everything else you’re doing online work better.
Why SEO Alone Isn’t Enough
Foundational SEO (like your keywords, headings, SEO titles, and meta descriptions) should ALWAYS be your first step. Without this set up, all the PR in the world ain’t gonna help you crack the code on ranking on search engines and AI engines, because they’ll be confused on which keywords & topics to connect you to.
Clarity = better SEO
Better SEO = higher rankings = more visibility for your business/brand.
BUT with AI influencing search rankings, signals of trust and authority matter now more than ever.
And PR is one of the ultimate trust signals.
Because it’s like street cred for the internet that the bots can track.
The bots see that you were mentioned, quoted, or highlighted on another high authority website or publication? AND it matches what you’ve already said about your business/brand on your own website?
THIS IS GOLDEN.
Your website outlines & gives clarity for your expertise, but PR helps back up your claims.
This means consistent, intentional PR activities make your SEO strategy smarter, faster, and more effective over time.
PR + SEO = Stronger Signals
Let’s dive deeper into HOW exactly PR strengthens your SEO tho…
Doing these kinda tasks are the PR + SEO gold mine:
Podcast interviews
Guest blog posts
Collaborations
Media features
Directories (like Google Business Profile, Yelp, Houzz, The Knot, etc)
Because they continue to reinforce:
👉 What you’re known for👉 What you’re an expert in
PR boosts your SEO by sending traffic to your priority pages and building authoritative backlinks, which both signal to search engines and AI that your content matters.
(Backlinks = links from other websites BACK to your website!)
Every mention, feature, or collaboration gives search engines more context & trust about your expertise, relevance, and authority.
Media mentions → referral traffic + authoritative backlinks → signals to search engines.
In other words, while foundational SEO lays the groundwork & connects your website/brand to KEYWORDS, PR accelerates how Google and AI begin to TRUST your website & brand.
It’s kiiiinda like asking a recommendation for a local electrician.
You ask one friend, and they recommend a company called XYZ Electric – okay, cool. Noted.
You ask 5 different friends and 4/5 of them recommend XYZ Electric, you’re probably gonna reach out to XYZ Electric.
Search engines & AI tools start paying attention to your brand whenever other sources around the internet are mentioning it & linking back to it.
How to Integrate PR Into Your SEO Strategy
PR & SEO work so so so well together. (So much so that I’m ALWAYS telling clients & students to start implementing DIY PR in their “next steps” after working together on SEO).
But what does this actually look like in practice?
Step #1). Optimize your priority pages: choose your keywords, update SEO titles, meta descriptions, headings, and content.
Why? Because ya gotta start by making sure your website pages are SEO solid:
Make sure your page’s keyword makes sense for user intent
Update the SEO title and meta description
Double check that your H1, H2s & H3s are organized well, and reflect the page’s focus
Optimize that on-page content for COLD AUDIENCES (bc those are the type of people coming from SEO. People that likely don’t know about you yet!)
Step #2). Drive traffic intentionally: social posts, newsletter campaigns, interlinking from existing pages.
While Google’s over there indexing, we can make some additional moves, like:
Sending traffic to the page.
Linking to it from other content that’s already performing.
Getting it mentioned in other places online.
And every time we do that, we’re reinforcing the same message:
This page matters. This topic matters. This business/brand is an expert in this topic.
Step #3). Leverage PR strategically: aim for features, mentions, or collaborations that direct traffic and create authoritative backlinks.
Think of it like a feedback loop: PR drives traffic → traffic reinforces relevance → relevance signals authority → authority boosts ranking.
Press, SEO, visibility, and trust signals allllll compound together. And in the age of AI search?THIS is the game changer. You wanna make these signals CLEAR and centralized.
Clarity = better rankings = more traffic = more $$$
Step #4). Repeat consistently: every small effort adds up, helping search engines and AI understand your business/brand & authority.
Because it's helpful as fuck for Google, for AI bots, for website visitors, annnnnnd for future PR collabs to see WHAT you’re an expert in, AND that you're a trusted authority in your industry.
SEO + traffic + PR = relevance, authority, and trust.
You might not see instant results, but every step (targeting keywords strategically, sending traffic, interlinking, getting mentions) pushes your pages forward, building a foundation that AI and search engines can trust.
Conclusion:
All in all, it might feel like a lot to juggle SEO AND PR at the same time, but you don’t have to get either of these things perfect.
You just have to take action.
One step at a time.
One keyword at a time.
One page at a time.
One pitch at a time.
The baby steps add up my friend. Even if you only have an hour a week.
Remember: SEO is about having a SOLID website + content, sending traffic intentionally, and reinforcing authority signals. PR works by amplifying the signals that search engines and AI need to NOTICE your work.
Do it consistently, and over time, that effort is gonna pay off and your rankings + recommendations will reflect it.
